Hidden Door is one of Edinburgh’s leading arts festivals, serving a multi-disciplinary programme that celebrates Scotland’s vibrant culture sector alongside national names.
The website is a WordPress theme that I built from scratch and have optimised every year depending on the festival’s needs.
The branding is always tied to that year’s visual identity, incorporating elements of the festival poster, its colour scheme and complementary fonts throughout the website.
In 2018, I coded an automatically generated What’s On page, ordered by date and time, that can then be additionally filtered by the content type (e.g. music, theatre or cinema) or the date of the 10 day festival.
Visual art is central to Hidden Door’s remit, and so website users can also choose to explore the visual programme separately.
The website is mobile responsive, and I have taken care to reduce speed times and optimise the visual design for accessibility where possible.
In 2020, I managed an ambitious transition to a green host, which has increased the charity’s sustainable credentials online while better serving the website’s evolving traffic throughout the year.
